Jammu, March 5: Traffic on the 270km Jammu-Srinagar trunk road was restored on Saturday after being suspended for 12 hours as rolling stones from a hill in Ramban district damaged a steel tunnel, it said officials.
Traffic on both sides of the strategic highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir to the rest of the country, was restored around 2 p.m., officials said.
More than 1,000 stuck trucks and some passenger vehicles are being cleared, they said.
Officials said rock blasting from the mound overlooking the highway severely damaged the steel tunnel near Panthiyal in the early hours of Saturday, forcing traffic to be suspended.
Restoration work was hampered by rock falls at regular intervals, they said, adding that relevant agencies removed the damaged beams and eventually traffic was allowed on both sides.
Engineers are assessing damage to the tunnel and repair work will begin shortly, officials said. (Agencies)
