A massive landslide blocked the Jammu-Srinagar national highway near Banihal on Friday, leaving thousands of vehicles stranded, officials said.

The landslide hit the 270km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, in Romepadi at around 11 a.m. during ongoing work on a four-lane project, they said. declared.

A demining operation was launched by the services concerned.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Traffic (National Highway), Asgar Malik said, “Large boulders fell from a mound and completely blocked the highway. It takes at least four hours to clear the debris to restore traffic to the highway,” he said.

Traffic was halted on both sides of the highway, he said.

Officials say clearance agencies must work very carefully to ensure no damage is done to a bridge providing connectivity with a rail tunnel under construction.
