Due to heavy rains in Navsari, Valsad and Dang districts in South Gujarat, National Highway 48 from Alipore in Navsari district to Valsad has been temporarily closed by order of Navsari District Collector Amit Prakash Yadav Thursday morning.

Yadav told The Indian Express that the NH was temporarily closed after floodwaters inundated the road. “A flood-like situation is still there in three talukas, Navsari, Gandevi and Jalalpore, and our teams are engaged in rescue work,” Yadav said.

Due to heavy downpours, the Kaveri, Purna and Ambika rivers in Navsari district are overflowing causing flooding of many villages. The Juj and Keliya dams in the district are also overflowing after a heavy influx of rainwater from the catchment areas.

As National Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force teams evacuate people stranded in flood-affected villages, a team from Surat Fire Brigade also reached Navsari to rescue and evacuation work.

NGO Surat workers have also reached flood-affected villages in the district and are distributing food parcels.
