BROWARD COUNTY, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2022 MetroDesk Media, LLC) – The Florida Highway Patrol released the traffic homicide report and 911 call regarding Pittsburgh Steeler Dwayne Haskins on Wednesday afternoon.
Haskins, participating in private workouts with teammates in Boca Raton, was inexplicably walking on Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale around 6:40 a.m. on April 9, 2022. He was struck by at least one vehicle. There is no pedestrian overpass on the Interstate. There is no explanation as to why Haskins was on the road. A toxicology report was not included.
FHP released this official account of what investigators say happened. We note that Haskins is identified as NM01 which is “non-motorist 1”.
“Vehicle 1 (V-1) was traveling westbound on Interstate 595 (State Road 862) westbound east of Interstate 95 (State Road 9) on the center paved traffic lane. Vehicle 2 (V-2) was traveling westbound on Interstate 595 (State Road 862) westbound on the inside paved driveway. According to the witness (Maryann Camejo), she observed Non-Motorist 1 (NM01) on the outer curb line of State Road 862. NM01 had entered the westbound traffic lanes while walking south.
NM01 entered the travel path of V-1 in the center lane. The V-1’s left front struck NM01, causing NM01 to reroute in a west-southwest direction.

D-2 observed NM01 and performed evasive maneuvers turning left in an attempt to avoid hitting NM01. V-2 right side tires / right side undercarriage partially contacted NM01. The V-1 and V-2 shut down in a controlled manner. The V-1 came to a permanent stop in the gore area on the right side of westbound State Road 862, just west of the west-facing State Road 9 entrance ramp. The V-2 came to a permanent stop on the paved outer shoulder of westbound State Road 862 in the northbound entrance ramp area of westbound State Road 9.
According to the witness (Maryann Camejo), a third vehicle was involved. Ms. Camejo described the vehicle as a beige/cream sedan. No other information was provided on this vehicle. Dwayne Elliot Haskins Jr., DOB 3/5/1997, (NM01) succumbed to his injuries at the scene and was pronounced dead by Fort Lauderdale Fire Department Capt. Rod Watkins at 6:48 a.m.
